Next Wednesday, December 13th, from 6 to 8 pm at the High Beck Tavern, the Franklin County Young Democrats are hosting a Holiday Party and Toy Drive. The cost is either one toy or $10. Draft beer and pizza will be provided free of charge.

Wednesday Meeting and Cocktail Hour

7pm. Our guest speaker will be John Carney, candidate for Ohio House
District 22. We will be discussing the upcoming OYD Meeting, our
planned fundraiser for Sherrod Brown, and how to reach out to more
young people before the election.

Also, this Tuesday at the Spice Bar we are helping out with a social
event for Democrats. Chairman Chris Redfern will also be attending
this "Blue Cocktail" event at 5:30 pm at the Spice Bar in the Arena

Touted as a real person to solve Ohio's real problems, Murphy knows how crucial immediate and up-to-date information is to Central Ohio's voters. FCYD Hosting ODP Phone Banks

Next Tuesday, April 11th, the Franklin County Young Democrats will be
taking over the phone banks at the Ohio Democratic Headquarters to help
out with ODP's April Month of Action. We need ten volunteers to help
us reach out to likely Democratic primary voters and remind them to get
out and vote in the primary.

We'll be phone banking from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm. Pizza and soda is on

it. Even if you can't make it right at 5:30, we still need your help!

This phone banking event will be in lieu of our April meeting.

FCYD Voted OYD Chapter of the Year!

The executive committee and I drove up to Kent State this weekend for
the Ohio Young Democrats' state convention. It was an exciting day, as
we heard from Ted Strickland, Chris Redfern, CJ Prentiss, and Sherrod
Brown. Even more exciting is the fact that FCYD has been formally
recognized by OYD as the Ohio Young Democrats Chapter of the Year! We
are very proud of this accomplishment, and I want to thank all of you
who have come to our events and meetings.

For those of you that read this site that we never hear from, we
have way more that we want to do than we can do! WE WOULD LOVE TO HELP
YOU GET INVOLVED IN MAKING OHIO BLUE AGAIN THIS NOVEMBER!

Mayor Coleman to speak at 3/14 FCYD Meeting

As usual, the meeting will be at 6pm at ODP Headquarters.

1.) Introductions

2.) FCYD would like to expand our connection with the colleges. Our kick off event for this will be a bowling tournament! The event will be on Thursday February 23rd, from 6:30 -8:30, at Hillcrest bowlingalley. OSU, OSU law, Capital Law, CCAD and Columbus State will all be having teams. Candidates andelected officials have been invited. We have raisedalmost $400 so far.

a. We would like to encourage each chapter to have a liaison between the Franklin county young dems and the college chapters. We would like to start having weekly or monthly emails between the chapter presidents and young dems. We plan to give the unchartered chapters a copy of he chapter guide from OYD. We also plan to offer a cash prize to the team that wins the tournament.

b. We would like to schedule a social event or happy hour for next month, so that we can invite the college chapters to this.

3.) Dean Hernandez and members of his campaign staff also attended the meeting. Dean is running for the 21st district house seat. When asked how the young dems could be most helpful to his campaign Dean said the top three things for him were a) feedback from the young dem age group, b) Canvassing, parades, distributing info, and c) phone banking. If you are interested in his campaigns or need to contact the campaign their campaign email is campaign@deanhernandezforohio.com. He is having a fundraiser at Havanna on Wednesday and it will be $10 for Young Dems.

4.) Emily Kreider also attended the meeting. She is running for Ohio Senate, district 3. Her district is approximately 1/3 of the county and covers house district 19,20 and 21. In 2004 49% of the district voted democratic. This district may be targeted by the senate caucus. Emily is a small business owner and teaches other small business owners how to sell their products online. She also has her masters in social work. She wants to invest in people and communities. She also thinks that school funding is an important issue for the state. She feels that increasing the minimum wage is also important, and something needs to be done to create more affordable
healthcare options for small businesses. Her campaign is looking for a volunteer coordinator. This is a paid position and is full time. Some of this person’s responsibilities will be communication between volunteers and assisting with fundraising. Interested people can contact the campaign at Emily@emilykreider.com.

FCYD will be hosting a Pre-State of the Union speech Happy Hour at The Short North Tavern, 674 N. High Street, Tuesday, January 31 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Hopefully we can loosen up enough to stomach the President's speech. There will be free draft beer (Bud or Bud Light). Prices are $5 for Young Democrats and $10 for all others. Please spread

January Meeting Minutes

1.) Introductions

2.) One goal we have set for the year is to develop our relationship with Young Dem
chapters at colleges in Franklin county. A bowling tournament was suggested as an event that college chapters could be invited to, along with elected and candidates. The Hillcrest bowling alley (3440 W. Broad st) cost $30, for 2 lanes and 2 hours of bowlings. For $90 we could have 6 lanes. It was suggested that electeds be approached to sponsor events, especially those whose campaigns young dems worked on. The event was scheduled tentatively for February 23, from 6:30-8:30. A prize could be given to the person with the highest score, perhaps $50 put into the student activity account of the chapter.

3.) We have contacts at the following colleges, OSU Law, Ohio Wesleyan, Capital Law, Columbus State, Capital undergrad, and CCAD.

4.) Paula Brooks, Franklin County Commissioner, was our speaker for the evening. She has recently been elected as president of the board of commissioners. She spoke about the tough year that at the county has experienced financially. It took many courageous votes to get the county through these times, but she is happy with the way things have worked out. The county has several construction projects that they are looking forward to starting downtown. The largest department the county operates is Franklin County Job and Family Services and one out of six county residents utilize this agency. They have developed some new programs, such as Project Warm Up, which provides one time assistance with heating bills. The Katrina task force was also able to help over 2000 families from the disaster areas. County commissioner meetings are open to the public, and are on Tuesday and Thursday at 9:00am.

Thoughts on the upcoming year

Things have been pretty quiet since November, and I wanted to check in and let you guys know some of the things I want to work on in the upcoming year. First, I plan to put a serious effort into strengthening our connections with local colleges and universities. Over the last three months, FCYD members and I have put together a list of the local college YD chapters and their contacts. I would like to have a member of our executive committe go to at least one meeting from each college. I also want to help each chapter grow both locally on campus and through the county party. Katherine Thomsen had an interesting idea to incorporate bowling into one of our events, and I'd like to try to organize a bowling night with all the local colleges.

Also, we are still planning to start a quarterly leadership conference. Hopefully this will help us both reach out to new members and increase our own leadership skills.

Finally, I am working on getting an FCYD member on some of the Franklin County Democratic Party planning committees, so we have a stronger voice in the county party.

Here in Franklin County, we are expecting to receive from 200 to 2500 persons displaced by the hurricane in the next 4 to 48 hours. The immediate needs are clean clothes for people to change into ? clean underwear, maybe sweats, t-shirts, etc. I don?t know how many children and babies will be arriving. They will need stuffed animals to cling to, books, crayons and coloring books, maybe little backpacks. Or course the big need is for housing, short-term and long-term.

Chris Redfern launches new website

As one of his former employees, I know he'd be great for Ohio--he's been the most successful Minority Leader in years, holding his caucus's ground to negotiate a compromise recently on Third Frontier and, in 2004, led Democratic candidates to victory in 4 House seats which were previously held by Republicans (Dems haven't picked up that many seats in many years).

Deb Pryce and Tom Delay

Always good to hear that Deb Pryce is working to protect corrupt Republicans while jobs pour out of her home state.

House of Scandal is Deborah Pryce?

Deborah Pryce has taken $5,020 from Tom DeLay's ARMPAC. No surprise that Pryce voted with Tom DeLay 94% of the time between Jan. 1 2004 and March 31 2005.

Is this the kind of government-for-hire that working families deserve?

Deborah Pryce voted to weaken the ethics rules in a move that many say served only to protect Tom DeLay.

Does the integrity of the House mean so little that Deborah Pryce would sacrifice it to defend Tom DeLay?

When Democrats offered a solution to clean up the House by strengthening ethics rules, Deborah Pryce voted to make sure it never even came to an up or down vote.

So instead of a bipartisan effort to get government working for Americans, Deborah Pryce stood for cronyism and partisan politics.

Tom DeLay has been admonished three times for his unethical behavior, yet Deborah Pryce gave DeLay's legal fund $1,000 to help defend him.

Isn't that the definition of cronyism?

Congratulations to Mark Rutkus, Executive Director of the Franklin County Democratic Party for winning an Ohio Young Democrats Distinguished Service Award at the 2005 State Convention!

Mark has been one of the most accomplished members of the Franklin County Young Democrats in recent years. He has twiced worked to deliver Franklin County for both Al Gore and John Kerry while increasing the Democratic Turnout! He is also responsible for electing Democratic Mayor Michael Coleman, an entire Democratic City Council, both Franklin County Commissioners Mary Jo Kilroy and Paula Brooks, Clerk of Courts John O'Grady and countless Judges and local elected officials of all levels. He deserves not only OYD's distinguished service award but we are very distingushed to have his tireless efforts focused with Franklin County and it's Young Democrats!

Snow and Freezing temperatures did not deter many Young Democrats from attending the April 2nd OYD State Convention in Columbus, OH. We had successful participation in the State Convention with new FCYD member Shandal Jamal elected to Sergeant at Arms, and Sarah Saccany given the honor of introducing Franklin County Judge Jennifer Brunner candidate for Secretary of State!

Great Speakers were on hand to energize us for the 2006 Elections. Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman was joined by Judge Jennifer Brunner (Franklin County), Treasurer Richard Cordray (Franklin) and Treasurer Hugh Quill (Montgomery). All speakers are racing up for 2006 and have had much contact with the Young Democrats and are excited to have them engaged.

Following up on February's announcement of the OYD Run 2005 Program (see our website for more information), the Convention kicked off with a campaign training. Included in this session was:- The First 20 Things Candidates Should Do- Door to Door: The Most Effective Way to Win Votes- Fueling The Tank: Creating a Fundraising Plan- Best Practices for Young Candidates

Membership Committee introduced new members and new groups into the organization, as well as launched some of its own new initiatives. Five consituencty outreach 'directors' were appointed to target five key areas: Latinos, African-American, Women, GLBT and the Jewish vote. A Speakers Bureau has also been organized, to assist our over 80 High School contacts, by providing them with a network of speakers for their Government classes. Potential speakers involved in this bureau include various State Legislators and our Democratic employees at the Capitol who work at varying capacities.

New Officers were elected to the Ohio Young Democrats Executive Board, with three of four races contested. A complete list of the Executive Board along with emails is included below.

Campaign Finance Petition - 9 days left

The Committee representing the petitioners in the current Petition drive to place HB 1 on the ballot is offering circulators 25 cents for every signature they obtain. The petition drive is to stop HB 1 passed by the republicans after Novembers Election. The bill permits corporations to give money, limits union money, raises campaign limits 400% and permits children over 7 to give those amounts. The petition can be downloaded at www.countydems.us. We must file the petitions with the Secretary of State by 4:00PM on Wednesday March 30. Deadlines for getting them to us on webpage.

Any signature obtained today or after can be paid for. I realize that may not be that appealing to some but for others it may be an incentive to circulate more petitions. The only difference in circulating is that you fill in the amount of compensation as 25 cents a signature instead of the word nothing and list who is paying and the address. Check out the website at www.countydems.us for that info.

A circulator need not be an elector so high school students under 18 can circulate. So contact high school students. 20 signatures is $5. If someone wants to circulate for money they need to call 740-707- and check in with Amy Flowers or email her at director@athensco-democrats.org or me at sgwinn@athensco-democrats.org. Many students are off for spring break and there are alot of events during the next few days. Circulate for your favorite charity or just for yourself.

If you have an email list, please email out this email to spread the word. If each person I am emailing to emails to 10 people and they all email to 10 people it might go around the world.

This Saturday : Fight Back Against Corporate Influence in Elections

On Saturday, March 12th, volunteers from around Central Ohio will gather in Columbus, Ohio to take part in a massive petition drive to ensure that everyone has an equal voice in the political process. We are trying to get the issue on the ballot this November. Last December the Ohio Legislature passed sweeping election law changes that seriously diminish the rights of working families, and dangerously expand the influence of big corporations and the wealthy. The law ups the limit that individuals can donate to a candidate to a massive $10,000. A growing coalition, including the Young Dems, is fighting back in Ohio to give voters the right to decide if this unjust law should be repealed.
